Heritage Day: Many Cultures, One Beautiful Picture

There is something wonderfully South African about a gathering where the food is worth talking about, the greetings come in different languages and someone arrives wearing a Springbok jersey. Different stories, different traditions, and plenty of room for another person in the photograph.
With Heritage Day approaching on 24 September, we are celebrating the things that make our country feel like home. At SelfieBox, that means the people, the colour and the moments we get to help preserve.
Many cultures, one celebration
Heritage Day celebrates South Africa’s cultural wealth. It gives us an opportunity to share the languages, food, music, clothing and family traditions that shape who we are.
A favourite family recipe can start a conversation. An outfit can carry a story passed down through generations. A colleague can teach you a greeting you have never used before. Those small exchanges make a celebration personal.
Our SABC Heritage Day event in Johannesburg, pictured above, is one example of a SelfieBox setup becoming part of the occasion. A thoughtfully styled space gives people somewhere to gather and capture a memory together.
Braai Day: there is room around the fire
For many of us, a Heritage Day celebration also means Braai Day. The fire is lit, someone has a very firm opinion about the coals, and the conversation carries on long after the food is ready.
From boerewors and braaibroodjies to a favourite side dish or something delicious off the vegetable grill, everyone can bring a little of themselves to the table. The best part is the time together: catching up, sharing stories and making space for one another.
For a company Heritage Day braai, invite colleagues to contribute a dish or a story if they would like to. Add a photo booth in a sheltered spot away from the heat and smoke, and you have a simple way to capture the people who made the day special.
Green, gold and a shared “Go Bokke!”
Then there are the Springboks. A green-and-gold jersey can turn strangers into conversation partners before anyone has even introduced themselves. We may have different backgrounds, but cheering for the Boks gives many South Africans something joyful to share.
We have captured that supporter spirit with our HaloBox at an Energade rugby activation. The photograph below says it beautifully: big smiles, proud colours and a memory worth keeping.

You do not need a match on the day to bring that energy to your celebration. A touch of green and gold, friends together and an enthusiastic “Go Bokke!” can be enough.

Heritage Day photo booth ideas for your celebration
Whether you are planning an office gathering, a community celebration or a family braai, keep the photographs centred on your guests.
- Let people bring their own style. Traditional clothing, a favourite outfit or a rugby jersey can all have a place in the picture.
- Make the print personal. Add your event name, date and a Heritage Day message to a custom photo layout.
- Get everyone together. Make time for group photographs across departments, friendship circles and generations.
- Create one shared picture. A Mosaic Wall brings individual guest photos together into a larger artwork—a fitting way to celebrate many people belonging to one community.
Proudly South African. Grateful to be part of it.
We are grateful to God for this country, its people and the opportunity to share in so many celebrations. Every event reminds us that there is so much worth appreciating, and so many stories still worth hearing.
This Heritage Day, share a meal, ask about a tradition and make room in the photograph. Whether you are around the braai, dressed in your heritage or wearing green and gold, may it be a day of connection and joy.
Many cultures. One beautiful picture. Happy Heritage Day, South Africa—and Go Bokke!
